Round 11 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship in New York provided all the thrills and excitement that has become synonymous with the all-electric, street racing series today.

After a dawn start for the second round of the North American event, a highly competitive Qualifying session saw NIO 333 Formula E Team drivers Oliver Turvey and Tom Blomqvist line up on the grid for the start of the punishing New York City E-Prix in P17 and P18 respectively.

Oliver Turvey, #8 NIO 333 FE 001

Qualifying Group 4 - Race Grid Position: P17

Round 11 Race Result: DNF

“I was compromised with only one set of tyres for the day, due to yesterday’s damage. I struggled a bit for pace in Qualifying and during the opening phase of the race. As the race progressed it felt like our pace did improve and I was able to keep pace with some of the guys around me and close back in. Our energy was looking stronger toward the end of the race, so I felt that we made some progress in terms of the race from yesterday. Unfortunately, I clipped the wall just at the end. It was a shame to finish the race like that, especially as I was looking forward to trying to move forward in the last few laps, but I think we can take the positives that we made some progress in the race condition and hopefully we can earn from everything we’ve done this weekend and come back stronger for London.”

Tom Blomqvist, #88 NIO 333 FE 001

Qualifying Group 4 - Race Grid Position: P18

Round 11 Race Result: provisional P21

“Another difficult day. I made a mistake in Qualifying, clipping the wall during the last quarter of the lap which compromised it quite a lot. I had a half decent start to the race gaining positions, but then I had a technical issue which meant I received a drive through penalty. Obviously, your race is then completely compromised and boxes you in to one strategy - to save a little bit of energy and hope there’s a safety car.

We obviously need to keep our heads down and keep chipping away, trying to learn and improve, and keep making steps forward at every race and towards getting more points.”

Christian Silk, Team Principal, NIO 333 Formula E Team

“It was a disappointing race. I don’t feel that we got the results we deserved given the performance potential of the cars. Everyone worked hard last night to try to understand the issues we experienced yesterday, and we’d made good progress this morning.

Tom was on for a strong Qualifying performance before a mistake in T12 cost him dearly. Oliver struggled a little more on his Qualifying lap and we ended up with the drivers next to each other in P17 and P18 on the grid.

Obviously, from the back we were going to struggle to make much of an impression during the race. Both drivers had clean starts and Tom, despite lining up on the dirty side, had a very strong first lap. Unfortunately, we had a technicality issue with the #88 car which forced us to take a drive through penalty. After that we tried to save maximum energy, hoping for a safety car deployment later in the race which would close up the pack.

On a positive note, Tom was very complimentary regarding the handling of the car and Oliver was running strongly throughout the race, battling with the cars in the second pack around him before he was forced to retire due to car damage. We shall keep working hard toward our goal of points scoring results ahead of the London event in two weeks.”

The ABB Formula E World Championship now heads to the ExCel Exhibition Centre in London, United Kingdom, for Rounds 12 and 13 of the all-electric racing series on Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th July 2021.
